I remain unconvinced that people really need fractional seconds for
this value. A second is a perfectly fine quanta. I mean, what are
you going to do with the extra half-second? And once you have
fractions, are you then going to get into %upd_freq of 0.005 or
something? (after all, if a second is a large quanta, then a
half-second probably is too).

I'm probably a bit hostile to this simply because I'm tired of a
whole raft of things where everyone needs everything "immediately,
right this second, or I'm going to die". If people can't wait for
half-a-second, they are simply simply taking things too seriously.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about this part. Yes, the implementation should
include some way to disable it (so that the status line is only
updated when the user hits enter). This is important.
